Just a reminder that this coming week (April 6 to April 10) is Spring Break. Please encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes every day. Enjoy the break!
The students had a fantastic learning experience at the Zoo today. They saw lions, cheetahs, panda bears and much more! We met with Chief Zoologist Sarah and she talked about the animals and their habitats. Many students had an opportunity to hold "Fred" the snake. Check your student's take-home folder for pictures with Fred!I hope you all were able to enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend!
The students had so much fun with Reading Week! We read a variety of books as a class and the children also had a lot of time to individually read books of their choice. We reached our goal of 500 books. WAY TO GO CLASS!Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! This week, in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, we will celebrate Reading Week. Throughout the week students will be given special time to drop everything and read. We have a goal of reading 500 books in our class this week. Students are encouraged to bring their favorite book from home to share with their classmates.
In addition to all of the reading we will be doing this week, in Language Arts we will focus on identifying homophones in texts. In Math the students will learn about telling time and estimating time. During Social Studies the students will practice map skills and learn about the geography of China. We will connect our Ancient China unit to Science by learning about the various habitats in China. The students were incredibly creative this week! They wrote imaginative stories about visiting ancient China and they worked together with partners to edit and revise their work. Please check your students take home folder and enjoy reading the final version of their story!I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend!
This week the students will be writing stories about an imaginary visit to ancient China (in Social Studies we will begin a unit about ancient China). They will engage in peer-editing and they will practice revising and editing their work. In Math we will continue our unit about money--the students will solve word problems that require practical money counting applications. We will also begin a unit this week on animal life cycles. On Tuesday I will bring tadpoles to the classroom and for the next couple of months we will study the life cycle of a frog. I have told the children about this project and they are excited to see the tadpoles! This week your second graders will be reading fictional texts and learning about synonyms and antonyms. In Math the students will practice counting and adding money. We will continue our unit on Egypt and think about the ways in which ancient Egypt has contributed to our modern society. In Science the students will conduct experiments using magnets and explore the various properties of magnets.
